A baby's skin is delicate and needs extra care. Harsh skin products, bacteria and even weather conditions can trigger rashes on a newborn's delicate skin.

Natural remedies can play a vital role in baby care and often provide gentle yet effective relief from minor ailments - even enhancing many experiences associated with the care of a new baby. It is important to understand that to take care of Baby's skin the most natural way is often best. Offer only products which are as pure and natural, baby-specific and bland as possible particularly during the first weeks. The more complex an ingredient list reads, the more likely it will be that Baby may be allergic reaction to one of the ingredients. Simple formulas are no doubt ideal for newborns and for anyone who suffers from sensitivities. Seek out manufacturers producing specifically for infants, as this field is obviously their focus.

Every Day Skin Care for your Baby:

Baby skin is soft and sensitive, use skin care products specifically made for babies.

Use a baby oil such as the JOHNSON'S® BABY OIL that moisturises your baby's skin and keeps it soft.

Bathe your baby with a mild pH-balanced baby cleanser such as JOHNSON'S® BABY TOP-TO-TOE® WASH, the only baby cleanser designed for delicate newborn skin and hair, making cleaning your baby easy and fun. You may also prefer to apply the Baby Wash on a soft face towel and then apply it gently to your baby's skin. In the winters younger babies may be bathed 2-3 times a week. In the hot summer months a daily bath may be exactly what your baby needs to keep cool and clean in the heat.

To moisturise your baby use JOHNSON'S® BABY LOTION. For dry skin, in the winter or in dry climates, you may wish to massage your baby with a baby oil such as JOHNSON'S® BABY OIL before the bath and with JOHNSON'S® BABY LOTION afterwards.

If you are using a baby powder such as JOHNSON'S® BABY POWDER, apply it gently with a soft puff rather than sprinkling it on.

Change diapers or nappies frequently. A protective diaper cream will protect your baby against diaper rash, by creating a barrier against wetness.

Babies under 6 months of age should spend some time in the sun, preferably in the early morning hours, rather than the mid-day sun. You could ask your paediatrician to recommend an appropriate sun screen for your baby.

Babies and children over 6 months of age should wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen that provides UVA and UVB protection and has an SPF of 15 or more. Protective clothing that allows the skin to breathe, hat and sunglasses are also recommended when your baby or child is out in the sun.

Is Sunscreen safe for Babies?

There is no evidence so far that sun screen has any harmful effect on a baby's skin, although there is plenty of evidence as to the damage caused by UV radiation. So apply sunscreen to your baby's arms and face regularly. It makes sense to first test your baby's skin with the lotion to make sure your baby's skin does not react to it. If you feel your baby's skin is reacting to the sunscreen, try a sunscreen that is suitable for sensitive skin. This should not cause any problems.
